Philosophy of Care:

  1. We believe birth is a common grace, a good gift that God gives to all people, regardless of their religious beliefs, cultural or ethnic background, personal abilities, sexual identity or orientation.

  2. We believe birth is a normal, wonderful, physiological event and should be cherished and respected as something beautiful and holy. We are committed to helping families have a positive, even transformative, experience during the child-bearing year through supportive belief in their body’s abilities and in God’s good design for birth.

  3. We believe every family and every person has inherent dignity and value in the eyes of God and should therefore be treated with respect, especially during pregnancy, labor, birth, and postpartum adjustment.

  4. We seek excellence in evidence-based, individualized, family-centered care that is characterized by love, grace, and compassion. We recognize that every family is different and we seek to integrate the care they will find supportive, encouraging, and mutually beneficial.

  5. We honor informed choices regarding care providers, place of birth, and all aspects of care. We strongly advocate for active participation by our clients in voicing their preferences in all decisions pertaining to their care.

  6. We recognize parents as the God-ordained, best care providers and decision makers for their children, and we prioritize empowering them in this role by providing them with information surrounding birth, supporting and empowering them throughout the child-bearing year.

  7. We seek to expand access to birth support to the underserved communities within West Michigan by collaborating with other birth workers and through strengthening birth workers and parents through educational opportunities as we are able. We acknowledge there are significant statistical differences in infant and maternal outcomes across several cultural intersectionalities and desire to improve these outcomes in communities that have been historically marginalized.

  8. We seek personal growth by regular participation in continuing education, skills practice, and peer review. We practice humility by acknowledging our limitations in knowledge, skill, or experience. We acknowledge the power of prayer in the physical and spiritual realm, and utilize it alongside the physical knowledge, skills, and tools that God has provided.

  9. We seek sustainability in birth work through established boundaries, regular time off call, and referral to other qualified birth workers.
